Building integrated community based catchment area (CA) management model through enhancement of cocoa based agroforestry, MHP’s productive use energy, inter-villages and sub-districts protection, rehabilitation and restoration of Rongkong CA to enhance carbon stock and strengthen natural infrastructure to adapt climate changes at Sabbang and Rongkong Sub-Districts, Luwu Utara District, South Sulawesi

Since July, 29th, 2016 Concortium of Operasi Walllacea Terpadu (OWT) Foundation and Local NGO Wahana Advodkasi Lingkungan Terpadu (WASLIT) has signed project contract of Window 2 program about Community Based Natural Resources Management (PSDA-BM), trough the funding of Millennium Challenge Account Indonesia (MCA-Indonesia) in Luwu Utara Regency.

The project objective are to improve community prosperity through the creation of sustainable low-emission livelihoods and adaptive to climate change based on sustainable agriculture and forest resources protection, management and rehabilitation/ restoration of Catchment Area. The expected outcomes of this project are: (i) Establishment of sustainable low-emission livelihoods and adaptive to climate change agroforestry-based, (ii) Rongkong catchment area ecosystem function are restored and protected to provide environmental services (water, carbon, natural beauty) as mitigation effort and adaptation to climate change. 

Two intervention strategies implemented in this project : 

(1) Site-level interventions include: (a) Improvement of monoculture cocoa plantations into mixed plantations with higher ecological and economic resilience; (b) Improvement of PLTMH; (c) Strengthening alternative sources of sustainable livelihoods that come from the use of electricity during the day (Productive use energy/PUE); (d) Strengthening BUMDes institutions as village business managers and marketing agents for superior village products.

(2) Landscape level interventions include: (a) Environmental awareness to build a movement for protecting natural resources, rehabilitating critical land and community-based forests restoration; (b) Strengthening the BKAD institution to facilitate cooperation between villages and sub-districts in community-based watershed management.

The Community-Based Natural Resource Management Grant Program is supported by the Millennium Challenge Account Indonesia (MCA-Indonesia) and managed through Euroconsult Mott MacDonald which has a working area covering Mamuju, Mamasa, Luwu, East Luwu, Kolaka, North Kolaka, North Lombok, Central Lombok, East Lombok, West Sumba, Southwest Sumba, East Sumba and Central Sumba.

This project  implemented in 9 villages spread across two sub-districts in one Rongkong DTA area, namely: (1) Limbong/Rongkong Sub-district (Kanandede Village, Komba Village, Minanga Village, and Pengkendekan Village) and (2) Sabbang Sub-district (Tandung Village, Pararra Village, Tulak Tallu Village, Malimbu Village, and Salama Village) North Luwu Regency.
