Build Community-Based Ecosystem Restoration Capacity in Lesan River Protected Forest in Berau, Indonesia

In 2019, OWT involved in a project called “Build Community-Based Ecosystem Restoration Capacity in Lesan River Protected Forest in Berau, Indonesia”.  This project located in Lesan River Protection Forest Area (Hutan Lindung Sungai Lesan/HLSL), Kelay Sub-district, Berau District, East Kalimantan Province, Cross-village mentoring nearby HLSL done in 4 villages: Sidobangen, Merapun, Muara Lesan and Lesan Dayak. GPS coordinate of LRPF located at 01 ° 32 ‘20.26 “- 01 ° 40 ‘29.67” North Latitude and between 117 ° 03’58,19 “- 117 ° 11 ‘13,47″ East Longitude Longitude.  GPS coordinate restoration area: 01 ° 33 ‘10.40 ” North Latitude and between 117 ° 10’6.37 ” East Longitude Longitude.

This project funded by Russel E Train Education for Nature Program WWF.  The project has success to train local partner through informal and formal Community-Based Ecosystem Restoration training.  The training was participated by 15 persons (Male:13, Female:2), consisted of Makmur Jaya Farmer Group and CBO of Nemdoh Nemkay.

The project sussessfull to restore 20 Ha of degraded forest land in Lesan River Protection Forest Area (Hutan Lindung Sungai Lesan/HLSL). In this project only planted native species (pioneer and climax). Total number of trees planted are 8,000 plants consist of 13 species of plant. We also maintaned natural seedlings that found.

The project hopely successful to support concervation of orangutans and other animals by ensure the availability of orangutan feed. Availability of orangutan feed can met by planting Ficus sp, Litsea Sp, Durio oxyleyanus and Shorea leprosula. Ficus is aprimary feed sources tree that is a keystone species for primates especially orangutan and birds. Ficus spp wich fast growing and began to fruit at the age of two years, stable fruit production and edible leaves meaning they provides a constant food option.

The project successful to reduce invasive plant by planting species wich has an ability to compete with weeds or invasive species such as Jabon and bayurJabon and bayur are pioneer, high adaptability to environmental conditions and fast growing species. This species has a wide canopy to suppress weed growth and invasive species.  Jabon and bayur have the ability to associate with CMA or Rhizobium.

Duration of project : 15 March -31 August 2019
