Forest Health Monitoring in HLSL Area

Operasi Wallacea Terpadu Foundation (OWT) in collaboration with KPHP Berau Barat and KSM Nemdoh Nemkay has built 3 permanent “Forest Health Monitoring” plots in the HLSL area. Measurement and observation of indicators and parameters have been carried out annually to obtain data on status, change, and trends of biodiversity indicators, site quality, productivity, and vitality. In the plot measurement activity, in addition to involving KPHP Berau Barat and KSM Nemdoh Nemkay, also students of SMK Kelay as part of environmental awareness activities.

The results of FHM plot observations have identified 87 species at tree level with a population of 174 stems/ha; 40 species at pole level with a population of 262 stems/ha; 50 species at sapling level with a population of 8,784 stems/ha; and 20 species at seedling level with a population of 72,000 stems/ha. The trees that have a high Importance Value Index (IVI) are Cryptocarya tomentosa (IVI = 19.45) Syzygium sp (IVI = 18.38), and Macaranga javanica (IVI = 18.06). The species diversity value for the tree level is H’=4.09 (high) and the Pielou species abundance index (J’) = 0.92, meaning very high.
